The European UV and lighting industry is currently awaiting the next phase in the review process of several RoHS exemption renewal requests concerning mercury-containing lamps. These exemptions are highly relevant for UV-C systems used in water treatment, industrial processes, and other specialized applications. In this article we give you an update on the current status and the upcoming consultation process.
At IFAT 2026, the UV Alliance launched the UV Knowledge Hub. To introduce the purpose behind this initiative, the UV Alliance hosted a panel session at the Netherlands Pavilion, bringing together industry experts to discuss the future of UV technology in water treatment and the importance of international cooperation.


In modern horticulture, reusing drain water helps reduce water consumption and limit environmental emissions. However, recirculating untreated water can also spread plant pathogens through the irrigation system. UV disinfection provides a reliable way to treat drain water before reuse by inactivating microorganisms such as bacteria, fungi and moulds.


In chemical processes, the very toxic substance dioxane can be generated. UV-AOP Technology prevents this substance from ending up in nature and eventually drinking water by supporting the chemical industry with a sustainable and innovative advanced oxidation technology.

Together we can make UV technology more visible and accessible to end-users. That was the key message delivered by Rob van Esch on behalf of the UV Alliance during his presentation at the IUVA World Congress in Lisbon.

The UV Alliance is proud to announce the addition of two new general members: Alpha-Purify and UVGERMI. This addition marks a significant step forward in uniting the UV-C disinfection technology industry.


Banana crops increasingly suffer losses from resistant Fusarium Wilt (TR4) and Moko disease. Treating irrigation water with UV prevents plantation infection—without using pesticides and chemicals.


At Efteling theme park, effluent water from the wastewater treatment plant is reused as an alternative to pumping fresh ground water. This reduces water consumption and minimizes environmental impact.

On February 1, 2025, the UV Alliance was officially established. This center of expertise for UV technology was founded on the initiative of four companies specializing in UV-C water treatment.


Installing a UV system significantly reduced water and energy costs. Additionally, it created a more enjoyable swimming environment and improved comfort for staff due to demonstrably better water and air quality.
